“What do you mean, the body’s missing?” She heard her mother’s voice creep up yet another octave and winced. “This is just another sign of your incompetence, Corwin.” Tarelyn heard boots in the hall and then a slam of the door.
“Brilliant, mother, bloody damn brilliant.” She looked down the stairs are her mother, perfectly dressed, perfectly coiffed with just the right amount of indignant anger in her eyes.
“How dare you speak to me that way? Your brother’s body is missing, my little angel.” Tarelyn rolled her eyes at the dramatics. “Those mindless creatures dragged him off and the watch is just now coming to tell me!”
“Funny thing,” Tare began walking down the stairs. “You’ve told me you visit the vault every other day, to bring flowers to your ‘little angel.’ Except you’ve obviously been lying to me.” She reached the bottom and stared her mother in the face. “You’ve been lying about a lot of things lately.”
Constanzia Montrose drew herself up, but still had to tilt her head up to look her eldest child in the eye. She opened her mouth, but Tarelyn cut her off.
“What are you going to do, mother? Threaten to disinherit me? I don’t think so. Micah is dead and uncle doesn’t have any children. That leaves just me. It’s funny that one of those lowly commoners you sneer at so much had to remind me of that.”
“I’m all you got.” Tarelyn threw the bag she was hefting over her shoulder.
“Where are you going?”
“Apparently Anna al’Cair found herself a boyfriend and Cylinn asked me to stay with her for a few days. It’s better than staying in this dank hole, with you.” She walked towards the door and then turned around with a vicious smile.
“While I am away, you can make up some story about how you happened to come into possession of a large cursed gemstone.” Tarelyn walked out into the sunlight and slammed the door behind her.
