The tension and the terror

"Bric.....he's got magic tricks. I can't compete with magic tricks"

"Don't worry about mate, I'll handle it"

"I mean seriously, he's making roses disappear while wearing plate. How is that even possible?"

"Just shut up, yer shooting yourself in the dick"

Of course, he was after all making a fool of himself. Muttering and sighing at each tossed rose and exchange between Catrily and Brayden. Why would he care so much about someone he'd only known for a matter of weeks? It was such a complicated affair, dating back to the scourge invasion and his efforts at comforting her during those dark days. He hadn't meant anything by it really but as they talked and laughed and shared in each others worries, he had felt something.

He cared for her, sure. It wasn't like he was an unfeeling bastard after all. But it was more than that. This was genuine affection for her. It was so strange now, but all his thoughts after getting back to the city had been checking on her or spending time with her.

"Oh great, another disappearing rose. This time behind her ear, how sweet" He had muttered it just beneath his breath, but apparently the booze was making him a bit louder.

"Oh I'm sorry, am I not allowed to speak to the woman you fancy?" At this point, Elyle turned beet red and looked up at the young warrior sitting on the chandelier. Brayden was just smirking down at him.

"I um....well, you know I never said...oh bugger..." He wasn't prepared for this. I mean of course he did after all have feelings for her, but the last thing he needed was for someone to just blurt out the obvious. He glanced over at Cat sitting at the other end of the table. Had she heard him? Did she even care? He couldn't gauge the response. Maybe the liquor, maybe because he was so embarrassed. Either way he was slowly sinking into his chair and silently pleading for something to happen.

"Oh for the love of....Brayden, I need to see you in the office. Now." The room fell silent as Bricu said those words. This conversation wouldn't end well, not at all. This was not the something he wanted to happen. It was at this point where Elyle realized something important, something profound.

He wasn't nearly drunk enough for this. It was going to be a long night.

"Why does everyone keep making something out of nothing?"

Catrily stood in front of Brayden, eyes wild in both anger and confusion. It wasn't too long before the young warrior realized that she was at her wits end. And it wouldn't help that he was about to add more to it.

"I just said that I hoped the two of you made each other happy."

"I know you did. But Elyle and I haven't even said anything to ourselves about us...or whatever. Everyone is making something out of the nothing that's there."

"Something is there. And I wasn't going to tell you but I have feelings for you and..."

Her trembling hands pulled swiftly through sun-kissed brown hair, shoving the locks from her violet eyes which had already welled up with shimmering tears. The evening had been laced with uncertainty, pain, confusion and happiness. It was something she hadn't really made herself deal with in some time. Not since the deaths. And when she'd set out this evening the intent was to do as she did every evening since the deaths; drink until the dreams came. Sobering up was already paining her mind as she stared up at Brayden through her tears.

"I don't know what to say to you. You know I've always thought of you as a little brother..."

And it only got worse from there. They exchanged many words, both hostile and calm. He told her his plans to leave, and did so...on awkward terms. Not only with Catrily.

Take care of her. Be good to her. Or I'll hunt you down myself...

Feelings.
An awareness or impression.
Yeah, I do have feeling for you, I mean...
I do too.
And there is something..where I thought was nothing.
And I'm glad. It's good to have feelings again.
Yes, yes it is.
A physical sensation: a feeling of warmth.
