Tears fell down Brayden's face as he took the gryphon north toward Everlook. He thought back on the previous two nights. The fight with Catrily, the botched attempt at an apology that featured him admitting he had feelings for her. She didn't feel the same, and that was all he needed to hear.
The trip to see his birth parents. His father and mother, elated at seeing him at first, wept bitterly as he left. His mother for what had happened, his father for the shattered jaw he received at the gauntleted hand of his abandoned son. "Be thankful I wish you to live and suffer for what you did to me," he had said as he walked out the door.
The air grew chilly, then cold, then frigid as the gryphon landed gingerly in Everlook. Brayden walked to the selection of mounts outside the city. Tossing all the gold he had to the goblin overseeing the mounts, he grabbed the reins of a black horse and mounted up. He rode south along the road until he reached the entrance to the Darkwhisper Gorge, then he yanked the reins so hard to the left he heard the horse whinny in pain. But the horse obeyed, and led him up the mountain.
He rode for hours, finally reaching the place he'd decided to settle. "Overlooking the edge of the world," he thought to himself as he dismounted and took his packs off the horse. A firm slap to the horse's hindquarter sent it galloping back toward Everlook. Using his Quel'Serrar, he began to dig into the snow. Several hours later he had created a hole large enough to hide a tent under. Taking the dwarven tent from his packs, he set up what was to be his new home.
When he had finished, only the edge of the world would see the opening leading to his refuge. From the opposite side, all that could be seen was snow. Smiling to himself, he took a small parcel of food from his packs and took three bites. He then placed the parcel back in his pack and curled up to sleep as best he could in full plate. The ground was freezing, his armor was getting colder, but he didn't mind. He always liked the cold.
Before he drifted off to sleep, he took the flower petal Catrily had given him out of the cuff of his gauntlet and dropped it down the front of his chestplate, to sit as near to his heart as he could get it. He whispered groggily "Home", then sleep took him.
